An Altar for the Summer Solstice

It is officially the Summer Solstice, also called Litha on the Celtic Calendar. Today the sun seems to stand still in the sky. It is the peak of the solar year, with the sun at the height of its life-giving power. I am celebrating with a bonfire tonight and my annual solstice altar.

This summer on my Solstice altar I’ve included the following items:

  • Brass Wire Sun (life & growth)

  • White Pillar Candle (creative inner flame)

  • Rose Quartz (compassion & love) and Amethyst (grounding)

  • Femme Figure (fruition and creative energy)

  • Dessert Sage branches (clearing and clarity)

  • Pinecomes (third eye & insight)

  • Paper Butterfly (transformation)

If you have a chance, light a little bonfire outside when the sun is setting. (A little indoor candle or smudge pot will work just as well.) Grab a small piece of paper and write down something you'd like to release or let go of as you welcome summer. Hold it in your hands. Thank it for it's gift and tell it that you no longer need it. Then toss it in the fire or light it with your candle and place it in a fire-safe bowl. As it transforms into ashes and smoke, give gratitude for making space for something new.

a night wind who burns
with every breath she takes."
