“The quieter you become the more you are able to hear.” — Rumi
Card: Invite Silence
Title of Painting: After the Show
Landscape: Self/Immediate Environment
Interpretation: We are living in the noisiest period of human history. Modern life is ringing with the boom and buzz of technology, marketing, construction, destruction, and more. Our inner and outer worlds are so full of noise that we can’t hear the deeper resonances of our life’s calling. To hear that call and respond to it, we need silence. Erling Kagge, the polar explorer and author of Silence in the Age of Noise writes, “Silence in itself is rich. It is exclusive and luxurious. A key to unlock new ways of thinking. I don’t regard it as a renunciation or something spiritual, but rather as a practical resource for living a richer life.” This card invites you to turn down the volume on your life. You’ve been go-go-going and it’s time to stop. Turn off your devices. Your nervous system needs a break. Slow down. Notice. Listen. And rest.
Deeper Resonance: Every actor knows the exquisite pleasure of finishing a show, getting out of costume, wiping the make-up from their face, and allowing the hum and holler of the evenings revelry to subside. This piece is an attempt at capturing this moment of quiet after the show.
